DeBoer speaks at SEC Media Days

Alabama takes the podium in Dallas.

On Wednesday, the Alabama Crimson Tide spoke at SEC Media Days.

In his first appearance at the event, Kalen DeBoer discussed filling the shoes of arguably the greatest coach of all time.

鈥淚 understand there's only one Coach Saban,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here will only ever be one Coach Saban. This program is special, and I guess I just take it as a great honor to be the one that gets to do everything we can to carry on the great tradition.鈥

Offensive lineman Tyler Booker told WAAY 31 why he decided to stay at Alabama following Saban鈥檚 retirement.

鈥淐oach Saban instilled in us the standard,鈥 Booker said. 鈥淐oach Saban has implemented that and it鈥檚 worked for so many years and the standard has lived on with us. That鈥檚 why I came to Alabama, so as long as the standard still lives here, I will be here at Alabama.鈥

DeBoer鈥檚 transition should be made smoother by having Jalen Milroe at quarterback. The Heisman hopeful totaled 35 touchdowns in 2023. DeBoer has built up a reputation as a quarterback guro, coaching NFL Draft picks Jake Haener and Michael Penix Jr.

鈥淚 think he's continued to expand on his game with the different throws he can make,鈥 DeBoer said about Milroe. 鈥淒own the field he's been strong. A year ago he was one of the best in the country with down-the-field throws. I think he's continued to work on those higher percentage throws that you need to move the chains and all of that.鈥

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian also made his SEC Media Days debut. While he feels his team is ready for the physical challenge, he knows they鈥檒l have to be mentally ready for the rigors of the conference.

鈥淚t's going to take week in and week out work ethic, preparation, innovation, toughness, perseverance, mental fortitude, if you get knocked down, to get back up,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t's going to take all the stuff we went through the last three years and put it in one year because that's what this conference challenges you on. You're playing at an elite level week in and week out.鈥

The Longhorns will have to travel to Michigan, host Georgia and face three bitter rivals in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas A&M.

SEC Media Days conclude with Auburn, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Arkansas on Thursday.
