One Gurley police officer went above and beyond to serve a grieving man in the community.
Officer Matthew Roberts with Gurley Police was on duty when he came across a man standing alone by the side of the road, visibly grieving.
Roberts said, 鈥淚 walked up, approached him, wanted to talk to him, and noticed there was a language barrier, but regardless of a language barrier or not, you still try to figure out ways to communicate in this profession.鈥
He was able to determine the grieving man was a father who lost his daughter in a tragic car wreck - something, he said, no one should have to go through alone.
鈥淪ometimes you don't always have people that are there, and I mean, it shows that we need people. We need people to support us and help us in times of struggle," said Roberts.
Thursday, in a moment of support, Roberts said he kneeled beside the man on a rock-cut road and placed his arm around him.
He said it鈥檚 something he hopes others would do for him in a time of need.
Roberts said, 鈥淚'm no different than anybody else. I wear this uniform to do a job, but regardless, I have a family to go home to and to just be there as if I wasn't wearing this uniform.鈥
Roberts said, to him, this is what the job is all about: going above and beyond for the community.
鈥淟aw enforcement is not always the same. We're not out here to be bad toward people. We're out here to help, and we go above and beyond to help those in need," added Roberts.
The Gurley police chief said he鈥檚 incredibly proud of his officer and the dedicated work he does for the community.
